Becca Blair
This talented young designer is all the rage in SA at the moment. Becca Blair Designs has gone viral, with almost everyone dolly from Durban to Cape Town sporting a Paul or a Frankie over their shoudlers. We were lucky enough to get a word or two from her before her trip to England.

I have been collecting hand bags since I was about 3 years old and I started sewing in about grade 10. I taught myself and wasn't very good. I originally studied Graphic Design at Durban University of Technology. I wasn't the most talented student, and i realised it wasn't for me about 2 months into the course, but I persevered. Three years flew by and I got my Degree in Graphic Design. My business started from simply having a dream. I dream big, and I'm just an average joe from Northlands Girls High School in Durban.

I love colour so much. I love ethnic styles with a modern feel. I particularly love zebra print, leopard print, paisley and mix matched colours. I am travelling now for 3 months for inspiration, so I could come back with some crazy ideas for new styles.
I just love everything from photography to interior design and if I had the time, I would get involved in everything.

I knew South Africa lacked fab rucksacks and I wanted those! We also lack funky backpacks, leopard print, South African flag, zebra print, etc.
Then I wanted the standard teenage girl sling bag - slap your purse in and your sunnies. So i made them in a basic shape, in about 10 different colours and they were a hit!

Some plans for the year...I'll be at the Camden Market in March 2013, just for some exposure. I post all over the world as well. I will be bringing back inspiration from London.
I will also be making amazing leather purses in bright colours. middle of 2013 they should launch. I'd also like to get involved in shoe design at some stage, but that's only later on.

My advice for other designers is to just do it!
I have no idea where I got the nerve to start this, but I did. You have to do it yourself! Ain't nobody going to do it for you! Be cheeky, ask around, send emails, just do it. Give it all the energy you have and if something gets you down, don't focus on it. Just try something else. There is so much talent in South Africa, especially Durban. but everyone move overseas. The public should support young designers. We need to be more confident and to be more proud of people who take chances. As young designers, its tough, but we need to persevere.

My ultimate dream would be to just get my bags into Harrods one day, and in every shopping mall in South Africa.... No biggie....
